🏆 Fanatics Fest NYC Opens Today with a Grail Display Unlike Any Before

The third annual Fanatics Fest kicks off today at the Javits Center in New York City, and the collectibles programming is absolutely stacked.

The headline for card collectors: CGC is displaying three of the most legendary sports cards in history at booth #137. The lineup includes a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (CGC 8), a 1979-80 Topps Wayne Gretzky rookie (CGC Gem Mint 10 with Auto 10), and Keith Olbermann's "Die-Cut Wagner," a 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner graded CGC Authentic (Restored).

The Wagner (a die-cut with professional restoration) heads to Love of the Game Auctions (July 20-Aug 8) after Fanatics Fest.

Also happening:

Fanatics Fest runs through Sunday, July 19, with 400+ athlete appearances and 200,000 expected attendees.

📉 PSA's Backlog Drops to 11 Million, but Budget Collectors Are Still Locked Out

PSA released its latest bi-weekly update on All-Star Tuesday, and the news was... mixed.

The good: The backlog has dropped from 12 million to 11 million cards. PSA says June grading was up 10% over May, and July is tracking to beat June's pace. They're also claiming a 99.4% operational success rate on grading accuracy and card safety.

The bad: Value-tier grading remains closed with no reopening date in sight. The cheapest option for basic grading is still $80 per card (Regular tier). PSA's backlog tracker shows under 5 million Value submissions still waiting to be opened, processed, graded, and returned.

The competition is scrambling too. GemRate data shows CGC, Beckett, and SGC all down 32-51% in the first week of July, while newcomer TAG surged 55%. TAG also launched their own backlog tracker this week, showing they've reduced their queue by about 43% since peak demand.

PSA's transparency is welcome, but X users aren't exactly thrilled. Replies to the update featured photos of scuffed slabs, months-old orders still awaiting shipping, and general frustration with a system that locked out budget collectors six weeks ago.

⚾ Why Vintage Baseball Cards Built the Entire Hobby

Here's a fun rabbit hole: Collectibles.com just published a breakdown on why sports cards wouldn't exist without baseball.

The TL;DR: Every format innovation happened on the diamond first. Tobacco inserts in the 1880s. Gum cards in the 1930s. The 1952 Topps set that invented the modern template. Football, basketball, and hockey cards all borrowed what baseball already built.

The piece also ranks the five most expensive vintage baseball cards ever sold, including the $12.6 million 1952 Topps Mantle (SGC 9.5) and the $7.25 million T206 Wagner (SGC 2). One cautionary tale stands out: the 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth rookie, which sold for $7.2 million in December 2023 and then resold for just $4.02 million in October 2025.

That's a $3.18 million loss in under two years, believed to be the largest dollar loss ever realized on a single card.

If you've got vintage in your collection, the full breakdown is worth a read.

🟡 Pokémon Center's 30th Anniversary Pre-Orders Are an Absolute Disaster

If you tried to pre-order the Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration set from Pokémon Center this week, you already know.

The website buckled under demand. Users faced seven-hour queue times, frozen Captchas, connection errors, and pages that turned blank mid-checkout. Some people who reloaded too many times got flagged as bots and banned.

The Ultra Premium Collection, normally $129.99, is currently at a $783 market price on reseller platforms. GameStop's initial markups (remember the $130 ETB controversy?) now look almost reasonable by comparison. The 30th Celebration set drops September 16, and it's shaping up to be the most chaotic Pokémon release in years.

For collectors willing to try again: Pokémon Center is one of the few places selling at MSRP. Products do get restocked, and late-joiners have sometimes gotten through, but bring patience.

PSA is still charging $80 minimum per card with no Value tier in sight. What's your move?
